Phoenix
is a hub for business - specifically, technology
related. If you have a thing for computers,
then come to Phoenix. Comanies like Honeywell,
and Motorola have a strong foothold here.
Arizona's population as a whole, according
to the 2000 census, is 5,130,632 souls, and
Arizona ranks 20th in terms of population. This
increase in population is the 5th highest in
the country. The other states that beat Arizona
were California, Texas, Florida, and Georgia.
Since 1990, the population of Arizona has almost
doubled (about 40%), which is the 2nd highest
percentage increase, with Nevada being the first
with a 66% increase. Arizona and Nevada both
have one city that contributes the most to this
increase. For Nevada, it is Las Vegas (the fastest
growing city in the Country), and Phoenix for
Arizona.
To put this into perspective, the rate of poplulation
increase in the US during that same timeframe
was only a little over thirteen percent.
Maricopa county, which hosts Phoenix, has a
population of over 3 million people, and had
a 45% increase in population, ranking 119 out
of over 3000 counties in the country. In absolute
numbers, it ranked #1, which is the 4th largest
county in the Country. Phoenix is the 14th largest
metro area out of all 280 metropolitan areas
in the U.S.
Phoenix gets its water supply largely from
ground water, and also from the Colorado river.
Phoenix uses canals that were pre-existent from
the HoHoKam indians, and Phoenix has been incredibly
innovative in terms of channeling water from
the Colorado river, hundreds of miles away.
